Items from Clark Savage, Jr.'s Closet |
The items in this gallery were scanned a very long time ago when the largest resolution on computer monitors was a mere 640 pixels across and, as a result, the original images were sized to fit comfortably into that screen size. Today, screen sizes are a lot larger, but we no longer have access to the original books in order to do new scans, so some of the larger images may not be quite as clear as one would like. |
3D comics had a resurgence in the 80s and this is a selction from that period. Each company had their own process with varying degrees of success. The object at the top of the picture is a cassette (nearly an antique!) and it had a 3D soundtrack to be played while reading the comic.

A late novel by Charles Willeford from the heyday of Black Lizard books.
The beginning of Barry Smith's run on Conan The Barbarian for Marvel.
Daredevil Comics #86, 92, 124 and 126 from Lev Gleason...one of the highlights of the 40s and 50s. Covers by Charles Biro. The Little Wise Guys had taken over the title by this time. The owner of the comics would only let me scan them if I left them in the bags which is why they are a bit blurry.

Eerie Magazine #6, 7 and 9 from Warren circa early 60s. Frazetta on the first two, Dan Adkins on the third.
From 1974-75, we have a selection of the oddly rectangular Fantasy Reader, produced by Fantasy House, Ken Kruger and Shroud: #2, 5, 6 and 7. The Burroughs story was ultra rare at the time of this reprinting.

 The Kirby/Lee Fantastic Four-Nuff Said!
Steranko's final take on his James Bond version of Nick Fury. Steranko left the book over money disputes with Marvel.
An English edition of a very booooring book! Nice cover, though from an unknown artist and Sphere!

The Phantom has been published pretty much continuously since the late 30s in Australia. Here are a selection of the comics from Frew publishers. The comics are standard comic size with newsprint interiors and paper, not slick, covers. They feature a mixture of European produced stories and the Phantom newspaper strip.

Speaking of antiques, here is the jacket to an LP (?) that featured music cues from The Prisoner TV show. I got big bucks for it on eBay.
The precursor to Little Nemo by Winsor McCay. If you've never read the strip, the main character eats Welsh Rarebit (a cheese dish) before he goes to bed and has very intense dreams as a result, hence the figure on the cover covered in molten cheese. This is the Dover edition.
A really strange reprint collection from Greg Theakston. All the stories were originally published by Standard Publications, which is the only commonality among the stories. Features the artists named on the cover.
Nothing like Silver Age Superman covers, this time around Superman #161 and 164. Curt Swan art with George Klein inks.
Web of Horror #1 from 1969 with a Jeff Jones cover. Early Wrightson along with Ralph Reese, Wayne Howard and others inside. Weird had the distinction of reprinting fairly bad horror stories from the 1950s under the editorship of Carl Burgos, the creator of the Human Torch. This is #11 (numbering started with #10) with a cover by Bob Powell. Both were an attempt to cash in on Warren's success.
